The IRS launched a new online search tool, Exempt Organizations Select Check, to help users more easily find information about tax-exempt organizations. It consolidates three former search sites into one, providing expanded search capability and a more efficient way to search for organizations. Users can now go to one location on IRS.gov to search for:

Organizations eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions (formerly listed in electronic Publication 78). Users may rely on this list in determining deductibility of contributions, just as they did with Pub. 78

Organizations whose federal tax exemption automatically revoked for not filing a Form 990-series return or notice for three consecutive years (Auto-Revocation List)

Form 990-N (e-Postcard) filers and their submissions

EO Select Check offers improved search options. Users can now look for organizations eligible to receive deductible charitable organizations (Pub. 78 data) by Employer Identification Number (EIN), which wasn’t possible previously. And this data is now updated monthly instead of quarterly.

In addition, the Auto-Revocation List may now be searched by EIN, name, city, state, ZIP code, country, exemption type, and revocation posting date, rather than only by state.

The EO Select Check site also contains search tips that offer suggestions on how to use the search application.

I’ve always thought that it meant, good, dependent, diversified streams of revenue. And it does – but fiscal fitness means so much more. In a word, it means: Awareness. Are you aware of your finances?

Or, does this quote strike a chord?

“… many of the challenges we identified in the study are widespread throughout the nonprofit sector, including issues associated with government contract compliance, managing and monitoring cash flow, and accurately budgeting for the full costs of programs.”

- from, “Fiscal Fitness for Nonprofits: Project Puts Chicago After-School Programs and Funders Through a Financial Workout” published by The Wallace Foundation

I recently came across this series of reports from the Wallace Foundation on the fiscal fitness training of Chicago-area after-school programs: See more here.

Not only was I intrigued at how important it is to understand your finances in the ways described in their reports, but also I was relieved to discover that nonprofit financial savvy is within reach. These reports made it clear that this is stuff any of us can get at. You can do this.

You have to do this.

Consider, which of these do you readily know the answer to? Which answers would dramatically change how you raised funds? Which, if given your regular attention, would dramatically affect the outcomes of your program?

What’s the cost per client of each program?

How many clients do we need to deliver services cost-effectively?

What other “business-model drivers” should you consider?

How would you begin to understand your finances in this way?

In the spirit of sharing tools here’s a write-up on “Break-Even Analysis” that can help you begin to see the variables your budgeting – so that you can be prepared with scenario budget planning.

Nonprofit Assistance Fund’s “Making Your Business Model Work: Applying a Break-Even Analysis“

Of course, we have many more resources on understanding nonprofit financial information.

This end of the year/before tax season information came across my desk this week and I thought it would be something you might like to share with your volunteers! ~Donna

If your volunteers use their car in the course of doing volunteer work for your organization, they can take a deduction of 14 cents per mile driven while performing service. This rate holds for 2011 and 2012.

This deduction will only apply to those volunteers who itemize their tax deductions (advise them to check with their tax preparer), and it is classified as a charitable donation – “use of a vehicle while rendering service”.

Some ways that volunteers incur miles while serving your organization:
* Taking animals to adoption events or the veterinarian
* Driving your clients to doctor appointments
* Delivering food baskets to your clients
* Picking up supplies and/or equipment for your organization

So remind your volunteers to keep track of their mileage in a written log because those miles can add up fast!
